Kochi is home to many large and medium scale industries making it the commercial capital of Kerala. The economy of the city can be classified as a business economy with concentration on the service sector. Major business areas are gold and textile retail, seafood and spices export, information technology, tourism and allied services, health services, banking, shipbuilding, fishing and allied activities. Kochi has now become a major destination for IT and ITES companies. The availability of 15 Gbit/s bandwidth, through undersea cables such as FLAG, SAFE and SEA ME WE 3 ensures seamless data flow from world wide which helps the IT business.

Cochin Shipyard Ltd.

Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) is one of the leading shipbuilding & repair yard in India, which has an infrastructure that combines economy, scale, and flexibility, and has ISO 9001 accreditation. CSL also has an exclusive area set for offshore construction and future expansion.

As one of the India's top 10 public sector undertakings, CSL has been rated excellent by the Government of India, four times in a row for achieving the targets set for the yard under the MOU system.

With specialised industry knowledge and superior resources, CSL has constantly unfolded new levels of excellence in shipbuilding and ship repair.

Cochin Shipyard was launched in 1976. Since then it has evolved into the builder of the largest vessels constructed in India for the Merchant Navy and the Indian Naval Services.

CSL's reputation for accomplishing time-sensitive assignments, whilst offering solutions that are by far the most competitive, has made it a preferred partner to some of the most demanding clients worldwide.

Cochin Shipyard is strategically located - midway on the international trade corridor, connecting Europe, Middle East and the Pacific Rim.

The credit of building the largest ships in India goes to Cochin shipyard. CSL has so far built a wide variety of vessels including Tankers, Bulk Carriers, Heavy Engineering Structures, and tugs for various ports of India, Patrol Vessels, Passenger Vessels and Docking Pontoons.

CSL has two world class docks, one for shipbuilding & one for ship-repair. It has 69 cranes for supporting its activities in ship building repairing and upgrading. 150 T gantry crane, which is the second largest in Asia covers the whole of assembly shop and building dock.

CSL is spread over 190 acres of land and has 2 docks and 3 quays. Apart from this the yard has a Steel Stockyard that can hold up to 60,000 t of steel, the largest Hull Fabrication Shop in India with 30,000 sq m covered area, an Assembly Shop with a telescopic sliding roof serviced by a 150 t Gantry Crane, an Engine and Machine Shop, an Electric Machinery Shop, and a Pipe Shop.

Years of struggle and many innovative efforts, including aggressive marketing has finally paid off as the yard is on the threshold of achieving the vision of making a mark in the international market. 

Cochin Port Trust
Kochi has a strategic location on the international seafaring route lying midway between Europe, Middle East and East Asia and the Pacific Rim. The all weather natural harbour and the large export of goods, especially spices and sea food makes it a very important port in India. The port is located on Willingdon Island. The Port Trust is building an international container trans-shipment terminal at Vallarpadam to tap the large cargo movement along the international east-west sea lane.

Headquarters of the Southern Naval Command
The Southern Naval Command has its headquarters in Kochi. The base is located on Willingdon Island. The Naval base is home to the training schools/establishments/ships and also accommodates all the facilities for the overall development of the personality and day-to-day requirements of the trainees such as telephone booths, cinema hall, football, hockey, volleyball and basketball grounds, a swimming pool, tennis and indoor squash and badminton courts, shopping complex. Naval base has a full-fledged naval hospital, INHS Sanjivani.  

Various social functions, formal and informal such as the Navy Ball, receptions for visiting dignitaries, celebrations of National festivals etc are held at the Southern Naval Command Mess, Officers' Institute and the Sailing Club. In addition, a number of cultural programmes are organised at the Naval auditorium Sagarika. The Naval wives run a Navy Wives Welfare Association (NWWA) which looks after a host of welfare activities that form part and parcel of Naval community life.  

Kochi Refineries Limited
Kochi Refineries, formerly known as Cochin Refineries, is one of India's major regional oil refiners. The company's refinery complex, originally established in 1963 with a refining capacity of 2.5 million metric tons per year, now has an annual refining throughput capacity of 7.5 million metric tons. In addition to producing gasolene (petrol), the company makes products such as diesel, kerosene and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), furnace oil, aviation turbine fuel, and bitumen. Other products include naphtha, benzene, toluene, and sulfur. National refining powerhouse Bharat Petroleum holds nearly 55% of Kochi Refineries.

Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore Limited
Fertilisers And Chemicals Travancore Limited (FACT) is India's first large scale fertilizer plant. FACT was set up in 1943 as a private enterprise; the Govenment of India is the major shareholder now. FACT was initially into the business of manufacturing and distributing fertilisers but has now diversified into engineering consultancy and equipment manufacturing as well.

Cochin Stock Exchange
The Cochin Stock Exchange (CSE) was formed in 1978, incorporated as a company and got the recognition from the Union Government in 1979 under the Securities Contracts (Regulation) Act, 1956.
The trading operations commenced in 1980, which were till then carried out through brokers located outside the State. CSE is the only recognised stock exchange in the State and it has done pioneering work in spreading equity consciousness and developing the securities market. It all started with 14 individuals coming together to form the stock exchange.
The Cochin Stock Exchange is directly under the control and supervision of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), the regulating authority, and is today a demutualised entity in accordance with the recent amendments to the securities laws made by Parliament.

The exchange is professionally managed under the overall direction of the board of directors. The board comprises professionals from various fields such as legal, administration and management, who are popularly known as Public Representative Directors.

The composition of the board is such that 3/4th of the total strength of the board is now constituted by Public Representative Directors and Government / SEBI nominee directors and the balance 25 per cent is represented by the brokers of the exchange.

The Cochin exchange was the first exchange in the country to introduce computerisation and "e-trading" (online trading) in 1990, much before the NSE was formed. As a matter of fact, at one point of time it was ranked the third largest exchange in India.

The exchange, in accordance with the SEBI guidelines, set up a wholly owned subsidiary company the Cochin Stock Brokers Limited, which is a corporate member of both the Bombay Stock Exchange and the National Stock Exchange and also a depository participant of the Central Depository Services for providing trading facilities to investors through the members of the exchange.

Infopark Kochi
Infopark Kochi, an IT infrastructural programme promoted by the government of Kerala, is a 100-acre campus situated close to the Cochin Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The Infopark is the best connected IT park in India with a host of ISPs as well as being close to VSNLs primary gateway that handles around 70% of the country's internet traffic. The Infopark aims to provide excellent infrastructure including office space and connectivity along with ease of starting up intotech companies within its campus.

Kochi is home to the International Pepper Exchange, where pepper is globally traded.

The Kochi fishing harbour, located at Thoppumpady is a major fishing port in the state and supplies fish to the local and export markets.

Cochin is also home to many other large to small-scale industries including Indian Rare Earths, Hindustan Machine Tools, Premier Tyres, Ogale Glass Works, Carborandum Universal, Hindustan Insecticides, Forest Industries of Travancore, Travancore Cochin Chemicals, Asoka Textiles, Indian Aluminium Company, Cominco Binani Zinc, Periyar Chemicals, Standard Potteries, Kerala Agro Machinery Corporation, Modern Bakeries, Kerala Electricals and Allied Engineering Company (Mamala), Traco Cable Company (Irimpanam), Transformers and Electricals (Angamali), Travancore Rayons (Perumbavoor) and Periyar Cables (Karukutty).
