Kochi, a historic representation of Kerala, royally balanced with the backwater on one side and mushrooming skyscrapers, a symbol of modern day living, on the other. The city of Kochi offers her visitors plenty of sites to holiday and enjoy. Kochi is called by the British Raj as the "Jewel in the Crown of the Queen of the Arabian Sea."
From a thriving port to a flourishing spice trade, from industrial entrepreneurship to fine arts, even some great cuisine, there is so much to savour here. There's something endlessly enthralling, extremely amazing, and entirely rewarding about Kochi. This was once a major centre of commerce and trade with the British, Arabs, Chinese, Portuguese, Dutch and they have all left their mark on this beautiful island city.
Kochi spreads across islands and promontories in a stunning location between the Arabian Sea and Backwaters. Its main sections: modern Ernakulam in the east and the old districts of Mattancherry and Fort Cochin on a peninsula in the west are linked by ferries. If you take a ride from the city’s east to west you can see the spectacular trappings of modern civilization giving way to historical treasures. A city of peninsulas and islands, today is Kerala's commercial hub.
Its cosmopolitan character is reflected in the buildings and structures representing different regions of the world. Maybe it's Kochi's cosmopolitan lineage, its sophistication and vigor, which has helped it become the commercial capital of Kerala.
Kochi also houses the Stock Exchange Center in Kerala State and is also a major auction center for tea and spices like ginger, cinnamon, pepper and cardamom.
